The oldest girl in a family of thirteen children, with three older brothers, Maria Lynn Barrs dropped out of high school and ran away from home when she was fifteen, never to return. Homelessness quickly grew old. She worked as a strawberry picker, housecleaner, gas station clerk, and nurse's aide before earning her GED. She went on to college, married, and had two children, while launching a career in local TV news. She started as a reporter, then moved into management and ran television newsrooms in markets large and small, leading teams covering everything from terrorist attacks and devastating storms like Katrina, to major elections and sports championships. She later moved on to become a TV station General Manager, before deciding what she really want to do is write mysteries.
