Many years ago (1993) I was captivated by the action-packed movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I wondered if business presentations could be improved with storytelling and began looking for an answer. I found "The Hero's Journey" was helpful but the learning curve was steep. I thought "There's got to be an easier way to learn business storytelling!". That's why I wrote this book. I've been in the computer industry most of my career. As a technical consultant for Hewlett Packard I've given many technical presentations to customers and support partners. I was always looking for ways to improve the content I was delivering. There were many things tried like systems theory, Gestalt learning theory, game theory and more. But, when I ran into storytelling, in particular, the mythic structure from Joseph Campbell everything changed. It was so successful, everyone I presented to simply loved the approach to my content. In fact, I left HP and started and managed a business for 10 years delivering consulting advice to many people at HP on how to integrate storytelling techniques into their presentations. It wasn't easy. Although the storytelling concept is easy to understand I found that many people had trouble with implementing the ideas. Therefore, the Business Storytelling Guide is designed to make the storytelling process easier for beginning business storytellers. In a nutshell, the system I created makes the audience the hero, the presenter is the mentor and the narrative is about overcoming the audiences' challenges (shadow).
