In the bleak midwinter, my book series are between Bleak Times at The Orchard Cottage Hospital which came out in July and Bad Company at Coronation Close, the fifth in the Coronation Close series which is due for publication on the 15th of January. For many people, the Second World War was the first time away from families. Husbands were separated from wives, mothers from sons, sweethearts left alone - for years. In my Tobacco Girls series I refer to a factory announcement on the outbreak of war. Those men who were already in the Territorial Army - a peacetime reverse organisation, were told to go home, get their kit and report to the railway station. My husband's cousin was one of these. Sent to serve in North Africa and the Far East, his mother didn't see him for three years and then only fleetingly before he was ordered back. Women on the home front, seeking the bright lights amidst the shortages and fears of a country at war in 1943. Enduring for now in any way they can whilst looking towards the future. I recently visited the air raid shelter featured in Fire and Fury for the Tobacco Girls. It's situated beneath St Nicholas Market in Bristol, a market dating back to the Middle Ages. Few people walking over its crumpled flagstones realise the history beneath their feet, the fact that people hid here when the bombs were dropping. One of them was Myrna Loy, the Hollywood film star, her name scratched on the wall. We walk through history and also keep a lot of it in our head, stories our parents told us. It's precious stuff. First hand accounts. Write it down.
