L. J. Hutton writes character-led fiction shaped by history, place, and embedded echoes of the past that resonate into the future. Her novels range from atmospheric contemporary mysteries with female sleuths and off-duty detectives investigating phenomena set in historic family houses; to twelfth-century-set historical fiction; and epic fantasy set in detail-rich, quasi-medieval worlds. At their heart they explore similar themes: what we inherit, what we choose to carry forward, and how we rebuild when everything we believe, and depend upon, changes or comes under threat. In her women’s fiction her leading characters discover life-affirming second chances in unexpected places, while her historical and fantasy characters rise to challenges they never expected to meet and find helping hands and friendship in unexpected quarters. Influenced by the landscapes and histories of the shires on both sides of the Welsh Borders, and of Scotland, her stories blend emotional depth with layered storytelling. Readers are drawn into times and places where hidden secrets come to light and heroes are forged, not born, and not everyone fights in a major battle – some have quiet victories and personal resolutions. Courage can be found in the unlikeliest of situations. As a mature student she studied medieval history and literature,and has a BA and an MPhil from The University of Birmingham. When not writing, she can usually be found researching forgotten corners of the past, or wandering with her greyhounds through old houses and gardens that refuse to give up their secrets…so far!
