Hello and welcome. I’m the author of Teach Yourself to Sleep – my first book, which I’m really excited about. It takes a different approach to sleep than is usual, exploring how our days impact our nights, the mind and body loop and the simple, practical things we can do to tweak our physiology, habits and mindset, to reduce our stress and strengthen our natural sleep-wake patterns in order to sleep well. I really hope it helps you improve the quality of your sleep and your day-to-day life too. I didn’t set out to write about sleep, but in 2016 I came across a book by my Irish great great uncle, Richard Waters, first a protégé of and then the right-hand man to the French psychologist and international self-help guru Emile Coué, known for his catchphrase 'Every day, and in every respect, I'm getting better and better’, which sparked a global rethink. There were a couple of pages in my uncle's book that made me consider sleep from a different perspective, and realise, after some research, that I was officially a chronic insomniac. As a journalist for a wide range of national publications, including the Guardian, Observer, Telegraph and Independent newspapers, I naturally read on, delving into the science, psychology and neuroscience of sleep, which led me in so many fascinating directions. I studied the latest sleep-related research and interviewed ground-breaking doctors and experts, working not just with insomnia, but with light science, habit science, experimental psychology, circadian health etc. And I tried out everything I learnt on myself as I went along, transforming my sleep pattern from one where I spent hours and hours awake at night and often woke up exhausted, to one where I enjoy deep sleep and wake up with plenty of energy. A bit of background: apart from living in Manchester during my university years and in Paris during my 20s, I’ve always lived in London, where I now live with my husband and three teenage children. Frequent walks in the local woods and parks provide welcome screen breaks and help to keep me sane, as well as being invaluable for a good night’s sleep!
