Ottesen documents the stories of people’s lives by combining words and images into powerful and accessible stories that resonate with a broad range of audiences. Through her magazine work, books, and contributions to documentary film, Ottesen brings her audiences close to her subjects to break down barriers and stereotypes and allow for the discovery and celebration of common ground. Ottesen is a regular contributor to The Washington Post Magazine. Her interviews and photographs have appeared in a number of other publications, including Esquire, Ms.com, and Washingtonian. Her first book, Great Americans, explored life across the United States through photographs and interviews with 51 Americans who happen to share names with some of the country's most famous, and infamous, icons. Ottesen earned a bachelor's from Wesleyan University and a master's from Yale. She and her family live in Washington, DC where they are active in the community.
