Justin Hill is an English novelist whose work has three times been nominated for the Booker Prize. He grew up in York, studied Old English and Medieval Literature at Durham University, and spent seven years with VSO in rural China and Africa.

His first novel, The Drink and Dream Teahouse, won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize and a Betty Trask Award, was a Washington Post Book of the Year, and was banned in China. Passing Under Heaven won the Somerset Maugham Award, while Ciao Asmara, his account of life in Eritrea, was shortlisted for the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award.

His historical novels Shieldwall and Viking Fire were Books of the Year in The Sunday Times and The Times. He was also selected to write Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. His books have been translated into seventeen languages.

He lives in North Yorkshire, close to the battlefield of Stamford Bridge.
