Julian Barling is a Distinguished University Professor at Queen’s University and Borden Chair of Leadership at the Smith School of Business. He is the author of several books, including The Cognitive Behavior Therapy Workbook for Leaders: How Improving Your Mental Health Is Essential to Avoiding Burnout and Leading More Effectively (2025), Brave New Workplace: Designing Productive, Healthy and Safe Organizations (2023), and The Science of Leadership: Lessons from Research for Organizational Leaders (2014). Julian’s research on leadership, workplace health, and organizational psychology has earned him international recognition, including lifetime career contribution awards from the European Association of Occupational Health Psychology, the Canadian Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology, and the American Psychological Association (together with NIOSH and the Society for Occupational Health Psychology). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2001), and named among the top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists. (2022-) Julian is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, including the National Post “Leaders in Business Education” Award, Queen’s University’s “Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision,” and the Smith School of Business MBA's “Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovation (2025).” Maclean’s magazine named Julian as one of Queen’s University’s “most popular professors.”
