Joyce Burns Zeiss has always wanted to be a writer. After retiring from teaching junior high school, she became a member of the Off Campus Writers Workshop in Winnetka, IL. Her experiences resettling a Chinese Cambodian refugee family in 1979 and her subsequent trips to work with Angolan refugees in Africa fueled her interest in the plight of the refugee. Her first novel, Out of the Dragon's Mouth, is based on the true-life experiences of a fellow teacher who fled Viet Nam in the hold of a fishing trawler. Zeiss has just finished the sequel which describes her heroine's life in her new country, the U.S. and is looking for a publisher. A graduate of Northwestern University, DePaul University, and National Louis University, Zeiss lives in Evanston, IL with her husband and enjoys yoga, gardening, reading, traveling, and hanging out with her grandchildren.
