Two years ago people of all ages and from all walks of life started asking me questions about psychedelics. "I'm microdosing but the screen goes all wavy when I'm writing. Am I taking too much?" "I'm going on an ayahuasca retreat. Can it harm the heart?" "I've been using ketamine for depression and it works! Will I have to take it forever?" You see, a few years ago I wrote Brave New Weed: Adventures into the Uncharted World of Cannabis, which turned out to be a "gateway book" – people presumed, not unreasonably, that I knew a lot about every substance because I knew a lot about cannabis. While I'm no stranger to certain magic molecules, I didn't have the answers to these very reasonable questions so I thought I had better find out. Once I began researching, however, I found myself drowning in a sea of information, some of it good, lots of it suspect, most of it marketing. What I couldn’t find was a judgment-free handbook that drew together contemporary science, ancient wisdom and best practices to help people use these powerful substances skillfully to maximize their benefits and minimize risks. So that's what I wrote. The book will be out in August 2025.
