I had the privilege of spending 14 years of my life living and working in Democratic Republic of Congo. There I learned so many valuable lessons; about life in difficult circumstances, about the amazing capacity of people to persevere and creatively figure out their lives in the middle of dire need. It taught me that I didn't need to be a "rescuer" or a "need-meeter". That I didn't have all the answers for their lives and that my role, if needed at all, was to come alongside as a partner in assiting them with their own plans and solutions to their issues. Thus the book, "From the Roots Up", containing some of the lessons I learned, often the hard way, and am still learning and many of the mistakes I made in not valuing the dignity and capacity of those with whom I worked. I remain in the role of promoting "best practice" in avoiding the building of dependency and restraing ourselves as westerners from the "know all, do all for others" complex. I believe my book gives some practical tools for helping us find our role as missionaries, outsiders with good intentions and short-term teams.
