JENNIFER BARRETTE: A LIFE OF CREATIVITY, CURIOSITY & GETTING DELIGHTFULLY REAL

I wear many hats: bestselling author, artist, children’s book creator, screenwriter, Founder and CEO of GET REAL ABOUT™ Collective, Chief Creative Officer of Transmedia Entertainment, wife, daughter, friend, and mom of four. Depending on the day, I might be writing about grief, grandmas, divorce, aging parents, mental health, leprechauns, burnout, Bernese Mountain Dogs, or Santa Claus.

It’s a strange résumé. I know.

The heart of what I’m creating today is GET REAL ABOUT™, a growing collection of books, journals, conversations, and resources for the parts of life nobody really teaches us how to navigate. Grief. Divorce. Aging parents. Burnout. Relationships. Reinvention. The beautiful stuff, the brutal stuff, and all the wonderful aspects of life in between.

The cornerstone in this series is GET REAL ABOUT™ GRIEF, my new book from Blackstone Publishing, arriving January 2027 and available for preorder now. I spent over five years writing this book while interviewing hundreds of people about love, loss, heartbreak, resilience, and what actually helps when life knocks you sideways. Those conversations ultimately inspired something bigger: GET REAL ABOUT™ Collective, a place for real stories.

Of course, spending your days writing about the harder parts of being human requires balance. So, while writing about grief, I was also building worlds for children, including GRANDMARAMA, the world’s first grandma superhero, the dog-inspired HOT DAWG series, middle-grade adventures, and an entirely new Santa Claus mythology.

My creative roots started long before books. I grew up surrounded by sketchpads, paintbrushes, and stories, which eventually led to a career in interior design, creating custom furniture, remodeling homes, and painting murals large enough to be seen from space. When an injury ended my ladder-climbing days, I didn’t stop creating, I simply scaled down. Literally. Murals became illustrations. Illustrations became books. Books became screenplays. And somewhere along the way, the floodgates flew open.

Today, I live in Northern California with my Caribbean husband, who doubles as my business partner, occasional co-writer, and frequent sounding board, the last of our four children still at home, and a rotating cast of animals, including two very opinionated Bernese Mountain Dogs.

And through it all, my first love is still art. I paint almost every day, often with watercolor-stained fingers tapping away at whatever book, story, or slightly ridiculous idea has taken over my brain that particular day. If you’re looking for heartfelt storytelling, honest conversations, useful wisdom, a little mischief, and absolutely no pretending that any of us has life completely figured out, you’ve come to the right place.
