Jana Buchholz was born in 1970 in Schwerin, East Germany. According to an unconfirmed myth, she owes her Czech first name not to the origin of her parents, but to their secret sympathy for the Prague Spring. As a child, she moved with her “rebellious” parents from the city to the country and from the country back to the city. She changes schools three times and takes everything that the small democratic state has to offer her: summer camps, working groups, sports and sailing clubs, theater choir, music school, pioneer republic, FDJ camps, civil defense. In September 1989, at the age of 18, she fled to West Germany via Hungary. The reason: a mixture of opportunity, a thirst for adventure and personal responsibility. The decision for a self-determined life and the opportunity to develop freely shapes her until today. She lived in Hamburg, Madrid, Munich and Berlin before moving back to her hometown Schwerin after 30 years. She always had her "escape story" in her luggage and told it many times in German, English or Spanish, and thus repeatedly caused astonished faces, open mouths, many questions but also admiration for the courage to leave everything behind and start again. Her book “Als ich wiederkam” came into being very slowly after her return home and is a kind of diary from the first time in Schwerin, when the magic of the beginning worked and all senses were sharpened.
