James Carroll spent much of his childhood in self-contained special education classrooms, where struggles with reading and comprehension shaped what he believed was possible for his future.
As an adult, James learned differently—through experience, observation, hands-on learning, and persistence. His path took him through computers, maintenance, skilled trades, and other careers.
For years, he rarely spoke about his experiences in special education. Then artificial intelligence gave him a new way to learn, communicate, and put his thoughts into words. It also made him wonder what might have been possible if he'd had these tools as a child.
That question helped inspire Sunshine & Rainbows: Escaping the Expectations We Never Chose.
James writes for students who feel left behind, parents, educators, and adults who grew up carrying expectations placed on them by others.
