Garrett Garland is a lifelong student of history whose writing is shaped by a deep interest in social justice and the stories that time has often overlooked. Drawing inspiration from his extensive travels and historical research, Garrett is driven to explore lives lived at the margins—especially those silenced by oppression, fear, or misunderstanding. The Violets Beneath grew out of an exploration that began with his first novel, To Never See Heaven, in which the character Antony Shrader reflects on the injustice he endures as a gay man and wonders whether the weight of his suffering is connected to the persecution of those who came before him. That question led Garrett on a literary journey to uncover one of those forgotten threads in history. In The Violets Beneath, Garrett examines what life might have been like for someone experiencing gender dysphoria in a time when the language, understanding, and resources to describe such an identity did not yet exist. Set against a legal and social landscape designed to suppress authenticity, the novel gives voice to individuals who were forced to live—and often die—without the freedom to be seen. Garrett lives in Half Moon Bay, California, with his husband, Sam, where the nearby sea provides both comfort and creative inspiration as he continues to write.
