Frank grew up reading the likes of Piers Anthony, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Stephen R. Donaldson. Although his reading (and writing) habits ranged far and wide, he never lost that love for fantasy and science fiction. Probably due to the influence of his crime fiction work (written under the name Frank Zafiro), as well as a tip of the hat to G.R.R. Martin, Frank's work tends toward the darker, grittier, more realistic end of the fantasy spectrum. In his worlds, magic exists but comes at a price. People can be kind or noble, but they can also be petty or cruel. It is a fantasy reflection of the people in our own world. His science fiction includes an alternate future history (at least at the time of its writing), sci-fi police procedurals, and an exploration of large ideas and people -- think civilizations and how an individual sees them and is affected by them. Frank lives in central Oregon with his wife, Kristi. Two magical beasts also reside with them – Pasta, a cat loyal only to himself, and Gary, a feral-turned-family member who is surprsingly sweet. Of the three, only one is at all impressed with his fictional work. Frank also writes under his given name, Frank Scalise. Those works include mainstream novels of heartwarming humor, children and middle grade novels about hockey, and non-fiction concerning law enforcement topics.
