Fiona Kuilboer is an Australian author, speaker and disability advocate whose books inspire understanding, inclusion and hope. After serving in the Australian Army and spending more than three decades as part of an Australian Army family, Fiona developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In 2024, her life changed when she was partnered with Hedwig, her Psychiatric Assistance Dog. "When I got Hedwig, I hoped he would help me navigate my life. I just didn't expect him to change it." That partnership inspired award-nominated 'Hedwig for the Win! Life with a Psychiatric Assistance Dog', a heartfelt memoir that shares the realities of living with PTSD, the life-changing role of an Assistance Dog, and the journey of rediscovering confidence, purpose and hope. It also inspired Fiona's 'Dog in a Vest' children's book series, beginning with 'When You See a Dog in a Vest'. Through gentle stories and engaging school visits with Hedwig by her side, Fiona helps children understand the important role Assistance Dogs play in everyday life and how to interact with working dogs respectfully. Today, Fiona and Hedwig regularly visit schools across South Australia, where they encourage curiosity, kindness and inclusion while helping children understand disabilities that may not always be visible. Whether writing for adults or children, Fiona's mission is the same: to build understanding, give people hope, and show how one remarkable dog can help change not only a person's life, but also the lives of those around them. Hedwig insists on adding: "This isn't just her author page—it's mine too. I'm Chief Inspiration Officer, official school visit supervisor and Labrador-in-Chief. My payment package includes unlimited pats and carrots. I think it's a pretty good deal."
