Esther Jones is a mindfulness teacher, host of the podcast The Unschool Space, and mother of three unschooled children. Like for so many parents, Esther’s own journey into unschooling came about almost accidentally. After realising that mainstream school was unlikely to be a good fit for her children, there followed some years of trying to figure out what things could look like instead, eventually ending up in this new and unexpected space. Nothing could have prepared her for how hard it was to let go of mainstream ideas about learning and parenting, or how different learning looks when children have the autonomy to direct it themselves. She began her blog, A Place on a Hill, as a way to understand and document everything she was seeing, and to also reflect on how this way of life was shifting her relationship with her children and with herself. She could see how deeply conditioned she was in so many ways, and how this conditioning was naturally unravelling as she paid attention, not to all the “shoulds” in her head, but to her children and to herself. Esther now works with parents who are on their own deschooling journeys, helping them to create a life beyond school in which their children and themselves can thrive, using mindfulness and self-compassion as the foundation tools.
