Elton Varfi is an Albanian writer and independent cultural researcher, born in Durrës in 1977 and based in Italy. His work moves across fiction, history, language, and cultural memory, following different paths united by a lasting interest in what lies beneath the surface of individual and collective experience: a mystery to be unravelled, a document to be rediscovered, a forgotten story to be brought back to light, or an identity to be understood.
His career as an author began with fiction. The Ghost of Margaret Houg is a mystery and investigative novel in which a search for the truth becomes intertwined with family secrets, psychological tension, and an atmosphere of unease. The novel was published in both Italian and English. It was followed by Occam’s Razor, a psychological thriller centred on the relationship between investigation, perception, and the ambiguity of reality, likewise available in Italian and English.
With Tales of Mystery and the Bizarre, originally published in Italian as I racconti del mistero e del bizzarro, Varfi brought together stories in which ordinary life is gradually overtaken by the unusual, the unsettling, and the inexplicable, until the boundary between reality and possibility becomes uncertain.
Alongside his fiction, Elton Varfi has devoted more than fifteen years to an independent project concerned with Albanian history, language, and cultural memory. In 2009 he founded L’enigma della lingua albanese, initially conceived as a platform for study and public outreach focusing primarily on the Albanian language, Albanology, historical sources, and the dissemination in Italian of texts, documents, and studies that were not always easily accessible to a wider readership.
After an initial period of intensive activity, the project was revived and expanded in 2020. From this evolution emerged Cronache Albanesi, which is therefore not a separate undertaking, but the natural continuation and broadening of the work begun in 2009. With Cronache Albanesi, the scope extended beyond language to encompass Albanian history as a whole: its people, events, documents, testimonies, archival images, urban and cultural memory, relations with Europe, and episodes that have often remained outside mainstream international historical writing.
Today the project is developed in Italian, Albanian, and English, with the aim of making aspects of Albanian history and cultural heritage accessible to readers from different backgrounds, particularly material that remains relatively little known beyond Albania and the Albanian diaspora.
This long-standing work of study and cultural dissemination also gave rise to L’enigma della lingua albanese, a work devoted to the linguistic, historical, and cultural questions surrounding the Albanian language, as well as to the different interpretations that have been proposed over time regarding its origins and its relationship with the ancient world.
In recent years, historical research has assumed an increasingly central place in Varfi’s work. In ATHLETA CHRISTI – La monografia completa dell’eroe nazionale albanese Giorgio Kastrioti Scanderbeg, he undertook an extensive study of George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, reconstructing the historical and political context in which he lived, his military campaigns, his relations with the European powers of his time, and the legacy he left in Albanian and European history. The work is also available in English as Athleta Christi: The Complete Monograph of George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the Albanian National Hero.
This monograph was followed by I fatti più importanti – Cronaca del Novecento: eventi storici decisivi dell’Albania, a journey through some of the events that profoundly shaped twentieth-century Albanian history. The book is also available in English as The Most Important Events: Chronicle of the Twentieth Century: Decisive Historical Events in Albania.
ATHLETA CHRISTI and I fatti più importanti – Cronaca del Novecento are the first volumes in the Cronache Albanesi publishing series, presented to international readers as Albanian Chronicles. The series was created to transform years of research, source collection, and public historical writing into independent works devoted to the leading figures, decisive events, and major turning points of Albanian history.
Two dimensions therefore coexist in Elton Varfi’s work that may at first appear distant from one another: fiction shaped by mystery, investigation, and psychological unease, and an ongoing engagement with the history, language, and cultural memory of Albania. What connects them is the same curiosity about what time, memory, or appearances may conceal, together with the desire to recover, understand, and give it lasting form through writing.
