EM Hager writes with wisdom and wit from three professions and six business ventures but all are surpassed by the difficult gifts she found by walking with her own mother on an eleven year decline into dementia. EM Hager has learned resilience, balance...and bounce from careers in both natural and digital landscapes which, in turn, have been shaped by the booms and busts on the prairie’s edge, where she grew up, and in the tech bubbles of the entrepreneurial San Francisco West Coast where she has made her home. Her first profession as a Landscape Architect taught her creativity in design and problem-solving. She founded and bootstrapped several businesses including one of the first digital atlas companies using proto-googlian imagery and maps (before a Google or an Internet). Both taught her about resilience, creativity, and the flexibility needed to pivot (as all living systems do). All this serves her well every day in her third profession as a working hospice chaplain… and in her approach to writing. This lived wisdom frames her understanding at bedside about the nature of birth, life and death-as a dynamic process within the seasons of renewal. She uses this perspective and humor to pivot to a better day... and good life in her writing and at bedside.
