Dr. James Beckwith is a doctor of optometry, longtime practice owner, speaker, and author who has been caring for patients since 1988. As the owner and operator of his optometric practice since 1990, he has spent decades helping people solve problems, protect their vision, and think more proactively about their health.

His work with patients inspired Positively Not Old. After more than 35 years in practice and hearing “Doc, I’m getting old,” with resignation, he began to see how often people accept aging as decline before they have to. His mission is to help readers replace that negative resignation with positive hopefulness, practical action, and a healthier mindset toward aging well.

Dr. Beckwith earned his bachelor’s in biology from the University of San Diego, a bachelor’s in visual science from the Southern California College of Optometry, and his doctorate from the Southern California College of Optometry. He is also a Wild Health Precision Medicine Fellow. In addition to practicing optometry, he has served as the Vision Source administrator for Southern Nevada since 2003, leading practice management meetings and discussions on best practices in healthcare nine times per year. He is a past president of the Nevada Optometric Association and former chair of the Nevada Optometric Association Legislative Committee. Dr. Beckwith has served as a key opinion leader and speaker for CooperVision, a member of the Optical Dynamics Professional Advisory Council, and a member of the Allergan Regional Dry Eye Advisory Board. His professional recognition includes the 2009 In Business Healthcare Headliner Community Outreach Award, the 2011 Nevada Optometric Association Outstanding Leadership Award, and the 2013 Nevada Optometric Association President’s Award.

Dr. Beckwith lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his wife, Kimberly. They have three grown sons. Outside the office, he is a fitness enthusiast, enjoys travel, supports lifelong learning, and still remembers the first time he went to the eye doctor and decided optometrists had the coolest toys. His first book, Jim and His Paper Boat, was written in fifth grade for a class assignment—and yes, it made local TV.
