I grew up an Iowa farm girl with all kinds of critters, especially horses and was a rodeo queen! My childhood horse, Sundance, was my greatest joy. I attended the University of Iowa., where taught students at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and was exposed to the best literature in the world. Later I would become a magazine editor and writer with credits in scores of publications including New York Times, NYT Magazine, and Connoisseur. I also taught writing and media at Northwestern and Marquette University. I am most proud of my volunteer work for causes I believe in: for veterans, women and children, the environment, animal rescues, refugees, and especially the Chief Joseph Foundation (CJF). A percentage of my debut novel sales goes to CJF. A couple of years ago, I launched a historical blog, Notes from the Frontier, as a precursor to my novel that now has more than 100,000 readers. My life dream was to write a novel. Now, late in life and after a kidney transplant, I’ve accomplished that with the help of so many! Thank you for helping me make Blood to Rubies possible. Read more about my book and historical blog at: www.DeborahHufford.com and www.NotesfromtheFrontier.com.
