Debbie raised her two young children, both born with multiple, visible disabilities and autism, as a single mother. She taught her children to know they are not their disabilities and to know they have choices. Currently, Debbie has spoken to over 2,000 medical students. She presented her experience to the Council of Deans, of the American Association of Medical Colleges, at their national meeting. She also gave the capstone presentation to the first year medical students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Debbie, her daughter, Heather Madsen, writer, and son, Logan Madsen, artist, continue to speak to medical students and have spoken to over 300 government caseworkers who help people in need. They speak in local libraries and other venues. Debbie speaks to the medical community and the general public about how she uses acceptance and love to overcome the challenges she faces as the mother of children with disabilities, and recently about how she rises above challenges from having multiple sclerosis, MS. Heather and Logan speak about how they are overcoming challenges from the rare disease, Miller syndrome (only 30 reported cases worldwide,) which causes face and limb abnormalities and affects other bone and muscle formation and causes hearing loss. They also talk about living with a life-threatening lung disease and autism. They teach about acceptance and how they create purpose and meaning in their lives. Debbie worked with government agencies to help Heather and Logan achieve independence and gain an education. Her daughter, Heather, has a bachelor's degree in psychology and is a published writer and inspirational speaker. Her son, Logan, has a degree in graphic design, is a self-employed artist, LOGAN MADSEN FINE ART, a public speaker, and a producer and subject of the award-winning documentary, LOGAN'S SYNDROME. While overcoming her challenges, Debbie developed a successful business and worked as a self-employed hairstylist for 40 years. She owns her own salon. Debbie is now retired from teaching aerobics after 30 years and recently, she retired after 40 years from working as a cosmetologist/barber.
