Dean Kirby is a multi-award winning former UK national newspaper journalist who was shortlisted in 2023 for an Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain's Social Evils. With a PhD in urban history, he writes about the street-level, working class history of Manchester, his home city. Angel Meadow: Victorian Britain's Most Savage Slum was his first book. His second book, The Scuttlers: The True Story of Manchester's Most Feared Gangs, will be published by HarperCollins imprint HarperNorth on 6 May 2027.
