I am a sociologist at the University of Toronto. I received my PhD in Sociology from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. I later completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Oxford, Nuffield College in the UK. I specialize in political sociology, the study of inequalities and social policy. A key area of interest is how politics and policies shape the lives of everyday people and in turn, how citizens get involved in shaping those policies - for example, through advocacy and social movement participation. I have also written about these and other related issues in The Hill, USA Today, Huffington Post and the Washington Post.
