Dave Hicks is the author of the Dust Runners series. The road there ran through a Marine Corps discharge, a casino cruise ship, and a county road department.

He graduated from high school in a three-red-light town in rural Southwest Florida, went straight into the Corps, and was medically discharged two years later with a bum knee and an MOS in heavy equipment. He was too young in 1989 for a knee replacement, when the hardware lasted four years at best, so he walked it off and found work. What followed defies summary: apprentice on a casino cruise ship, sous chef at an English pub, head chef at a steakhouse (twice), and personal chef to the chairman of a multinational corporation, hired on the strength of his liver and onions. He left the kitchens for a county road department job that let him drop his kids off at school and be home when they got back.

He started proofreading for an independent publishing house during those years, learning the trade from the other side of the page. A college composition professor gave him the structural tools to understand not just what a story does but why it works. After losing his wife to Covid in 2021, he reached a point with the books crossing his desk where he knew he could do better. So he wrote one, to keep the memory of his daughter alive. She was taken by a drunk driver in 2018.

Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers was his first love in the genre, and military science fiction has been home ever since.
