Born and raised on Long Island, I grew up with skinned knees, dirty clothes, and amazing summer nights. I spent time at beaches, on boats, and playing all kinds of pick-up sports. Backyards, schoolyards, and parks were where I could be found. For the most part, it was a wonderful childhood. Today I live in a small town in upstate NY with my beloved wife and my three sons. As the oldest of five in a family where the parents started when they were nineteen, I learned something about raising kids. I did housework and watched my siblings, but we didn't call it chores. It was just what we did. As I grew, I struggled with personal relationships, money, and health. My life took a few very hard turns, and after a major setback that nearly killed me, I received a gift most people in my situation never get to receive. A second chance. Once I stopped chasing things in my life I was never going to catch anyway, all kinds of opportunities began to appear. I excelled at work, and my family life got better. I became healthier, and goals I never would have considered before now seemed more achievable. My wife and I bought a house, and we renovated it. We had a child and later adopted a couple more. In just a few years, I had a life beyond anything I ever imagined. Then, another thing most people wouldn't characterize as good, happened...I got fired from my job. The gift this time was the realization that I depended entirely on a position at a large company for my financial security. It forced me to look for a better solution. After a few failed tries, I discovered real estate. I already owned a rental property, but when I realized I could acquire more, while keeping my job, real estate became my passion and my hobby. I wondered why everyone didn't pursue it. I dove into it like a July pool on Long Island. By the time COVID arrived, I was writing avidly. After blogging for years and using writing as therapy for everything from isolation to relationships, I started to see that my experiences could help other people in similar situations. I decided to bring it all together in my first book, The Small Town Investor. These days, I try to find time to sit in my favorite writing spot, searching for the "flow zone" where the words pour out of me faster than the page can catch them! I'm thrilled to be able to share my writing with you!
