Darlene Fuchs never expected some of the most important lessons of her life to come from the moments that nearly broke her.

She has stood beside people she loved through cancer, caregiving, dementia, and devastating loss. She watched her three-year-old great-grandson, Noah, fight a terminal brain tumor. She watched her father, Richard, care for her mother, Gail, as dementia slowly changed the woman he had loved for a lifetime.

Based on six years of Richard's personal journals, the book began with a promise Darlene made to her father: she would tell their story. Not a polished version. Not one that made caregiving look noble or faith look easy. The real one.

Richard got angry. He became exhausted. He battled depression. He called out to God and wondered whether He was listening.

And he stayed.

As his daughter, Darlene chose not to protect the difficult parts of her parents' story. She chose to tell the truth about what happens behind the closed doors of caregiving, where marriage changes, grief begins long before goodbye, and love is sometimes measured simply by showing up one more day.

Her family's experiences also changed the way Darlene understands faith. She discovered that faith does not always give us the answers we desperately want. Sometimes prayers are answered differently. Sometimes faith is simply finding enough trust to take the next step.

Today, Darlene writes about the stories that happen behind closed doors, the ones people survive before they ever find the words to tell them.
