Rev. Dr. Clare Biedenharn—often called the chaplain with a hard hat and a soft heart—is on a mission she knows is not impossible: helping seasoned nurses reset and reconnect to their call to service. Drawing on her groundbreaking study with critical care nurses, Clare teaches that quality listening is the first step. Deep listening fosters deep connection, which improves patient care, strengthens compassion, and offers nurses a moment of rest in the midst of chaos. Through her work with hospitals, agencies, and innovative programs such as listening services for travel nurses, Clare helps restore meaning and purpose to nursing which, in turn, can improve both personal and corporate outcomes. Author, speaker, and trainer, Clare wrote Heart to Heart: Spiritual Care through Deep Listening—now available on Audible—and provides free tools on her website. And her asynchronous online course, Heart to Heart-4 Steps to Better Listening, will be available September 2025. A Board-Certified Chaplain with more than three decades of experience in critical care, organ donation, and industrial chaplaincy, Clare also holds advanced degrees in spiritual direction and adult learning, and is an ordained United Methodist minister. Her passion for listening was strengthened by personal experience as she cared for her husband, James, through a four-year cancer journey. His encouragement inspired her to carry forward their shared vision. Today, Clare continues to guide healthcare workers from burnout to “repersonalization” through the simple yet profound practice of deep listening. She is also a proud mother of two sons and grandmother of four. “One conversation at a time, deep listening can change the world.”
