Christiane Bird is a literary travel writer, amateur anthropologist, and popular historian. She has written three books about the Middle East: Neither East Nor West: One Woman’s Journey Through the Islamic Republic of Iran, named one of the 10 Best Books of 2001 by barnesandnoble.com; A Thousand Sighs, A Thousand Revolts: Journeys in Kurdistan; and The Sultan’s Shadow: One Family’s Rule at the Crossroads of East and West. Her most recent book, A Block in Time: A NYC History at the Corner of Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street, tells the story of the city through the lives of people who once lived and worked on a single block.
