Rev. Dr. Charles Mentos is an educator, minister, youth advocate, and family and community engagement leader whose life and work have been shaped by a deep commitment to faith, family, service, and the transformative power of God’s grace.
Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Charles has spent much of his professional and ministerial life walking alongside children, young people, and families, particularly those navigating adversity, transition, and circumstances that can make it difficult to see beyond the present moment. His journey has taken him from working with young people in the juvenile justice system to serving children and families within Boston Public Schools, while also ministering to youth and families through the local church and broader community.
But behind the titles, degrees, ministry, and accomplishments is a story marked by struggle, loss, mistakes, unexpected detours, second chances, and grace. Charles is the author of Lean on Me: How God’s Grace Carved Purpose from My Pain, a deeply personal testimony of how God can use the painful, broken, and uncertain places of our lives to shape identity, reveal purpose, and draw us closer to Him.Through his own experiences, including the loss of his father, seasons of wandering, educational setbacks, physical pain, questions of identity and calling, and moments when life did not unfold according to plan. Charles invites readers to discover a truth that transformed the way he understood his own journey: When our pain is surrendered into God’s hands, it does not have to define or destroy us. God can redeem the very places that wounded us and use them to shape our character, deepen our faith, and carve purpose from our pain.
At the heart of his message is a simple but life-changing conviction: God is still working, even when we cannot see what He is doing. Charles believes that some of life’s most difficult seasons can become sacred places of spiritual formation when surrendered to God. His passion is helping people, especially young people and families—recognize their God-given worth, discover purpose beyond their circumstances, and understand that failure, disappointment, and pain do not have to have the final word over their lives.
An educator by profession and minister by calling, Charles holds a Master’s degree in Global Leadership from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His graduate journey initially centered on leadership for children, youth, and families before expanding into global leadership. A transition that broadened his understanding of leadership, culture, community, and the responsibility to serve people across different contexts. That formation continues to influence his approach to ministry, education, youth development, and family and community engagement.
Charles also received an Honorary Doctorate in Divinity in recognition of his ministry, leadership, and service to the community.
Throughout his journey, Charles has learned that God’s grace is often revealed through the people He places beside us. His wife, Vanessa, has been an important part of that journey, walking with him through seasons of growth, transition, faith, and becoming. Together, their story has reinforced one of the truths at the heart of Lean on Me: none of us is meant to walk through life entirely on our own.
Family has remained an important foundation in Charles’s life and calling. His late father helped shape his understanding of sacrifice, perseverance, responsibility, and what it means to provide for those you love. His mother, Tina, has been one of the enduring spiritual anchors of his life, an encourager, a woman of unwavering faith, and what Charles affectionately describes in Lean on Me as a “prayer warrior.” Through seasons when Charles was finding his way, wrestling with life’s detours, or learning to recognize God’s voice for himself, his mother’s prayers and encouragement remained a steady presence. Her faith helped plant seeds that Charles would come to understand more deeply as his own relationship with God matured.
From the sacrifices and faith of his parents to the love of his wife, extended family, spiritual family, mentors, and community, Charles recognizes that many of the people who prayed for him, believed in him, challenged him, and helped carry him through difficult seasons also helped shape the man, husband, minister, educator, and leader he would eventually become.
Today, Charles continues to serve at the intersection of education, ministry, youth development, and family and community engagement. His work is rooted in relationships,building bridges between young people, families, schools, churches, and communities and creating spaces where people can recognize their worth, strengthen their voices, and see possibilities beyond their present circumstances.
Lean on Me is more than Charles’s memoir. It is a testimony to the world and an invitation into God’s grace. An invitation for anyone who has ever wrestled with pain, purpose, identity, faith, or the question of whether God can bring something meaningful from the places that hurt the most. Charles’s message to readers is one he has learned through his own journey:
