'The Concubine’s Child' is Carol's debut novel for adults. It brings to life a world of abandoned ghost houses, inquisitive monkeys, smoky temples, and a panoply of gods and demons. "I first stepped inside a Chinese temple on my honeymoon in 1991. It was also the first time I witnessed my mother-in-law making offerings to the gods at her home altar, and the first time I was surprised by a monkey as I hung out the washing. Everything about my first visit to Malaysia was strange and exotic. But having returned every year since, the exotic has become familiar." Carol was born far from Malaysia, in Brisbane, Australia, but has lived most of her life in Melbourne. She taught English and Drama in secondary schools before working as an editor of children’s magazines. She has been a full-time author since 1999 and is the author of several young adult novels, as well as children’s fiction and non-fiction.
