Barbara Groves is an Appalachian folk horror author whose stories are rooted in folklore, regional history, and the darker mysteries of the mountains. Her fiction explores the creatures, legends, and ancient forces that linger beneath familiar landscapes, blending traditional folklore with modern characters and settings.
She is the author of Seasons of the Hollow, a four-book folk horror series set throughout West Virginia. The series begins with Mother’s Mouth, an Appalachian horror inspired by the Icelandic legend of Gryla, and continues with The Rootwalker, The Feasting Ground, and Bone Harvest. Each novel explores a different legend, deity, or folkloric tradition while remaining grounded in the people, places, and landscapes of Appalachia.
Barbara's approach to horror is centered on atmosphere, character, and a strong sense of place. Her stories aren't simply about monsters; they are about what happens when something ancient finds its way into the lives of ordinary people.
In addition to writing, Barbara is a professional book cover designer and the owner of Broken Candle Book Designs, where she creates covers and visual branding for authors.
She lives in West Virginia, where the mountains provide plenty of inspiration for the stories she writes.
