Amy Edelstein was born in Pittsburgh, PA. She spent much of her formative years immersed in books, poetry, travel overseas, and, once she became a disgruntled teenager, in a search for deeper meaning and purpose. She studied cultural development, education, and Western & Eastern schools of thought at Cornell University, dipped into the second wave of the women’s movement and eventually joined the migration to Asia where she spent four years immersed in intensive meditation practice. Since then, for 40 years, Amy has been working with the tools of mindfulness and systems theory, studying with leaders in the field and teaching around the world. In 2014 she established the non profit Inner Strength Foundation, which has helped more than 15,000 high school students in Philadelphia’s under resourced public schools work with the tools of mindfulness and systems thinking to realize their higher potentials. In 2019, she received a Philadelphia Social Innovation Award for her work. Her book The Conscious Classroom received an IPPY award for excellence in Educational Theory. She is cofounder of Emergence Education Press, which publishes books that have the power to transform. She loves living in Philadelphia, the city of America's visionary founders, and spends time walking the same streets as Franklin, Hamilton, and Jefferson, envisioning new cultural structures that will better serve us all.
