Allan Kozinn covered music and culture at the New York Times from 1977 to 2014, including 21 years as a staff critic and two years covering culture more broadly. In a career that has spanned more than 50 years, he has also written about classical and popular music for dozens of publications in the United States, Great Britain and Japan. Since leaving the Times, he has covered music principally for the Wall Street Journal. Allan earned degrees in music and journalism from Syracuse University, and has published several books, among them: "The McCartney Legacy Vol. 1 1969-1973" (the first intallment of an ongoing series he is writing with Adrian Sinclair), “Spoleto 40,” "The New York Times Essential Library: Classical Music,” “The Beatles: From the Cavern to the Rooftop,” “Got That Something: How The Beatles’ ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ Changed Everything,” “Mischa Elman and the Romantic Style” and “The Guitar: The History, The Players, The Music” (with Gene Santoro, Pete Welding and Dan Forte). He has also taught courses in music and criticism at New York University and The Juilliard School, and he has twice been awarded the ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award for outstanding musical coverage.
