Summary

Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

But on this occasion Smith has it wrong. The insurance company which will have to pay out a very substantial amount of money if Amanda Fitch obtains her certificate of presumed death has engaged Diver and Diver Associates to look into the disappearance of Gerald Fitch, more than five years ago now. As Jason Diver says, he has the very man for the job. All he has to do is to persuade that man to take it on.

Continuation of a brilliant series

I adore these books and this one did not disappoint. Perhaps Smith as PI makes for a more one-dimensional narrative than when he worked with his whole team, but the humanity, thoughtfulness, and intricacy are all still there.

Another Excellent Book

Yet another brilliant book. I had to listen to it all in one day. Please don't leave it too long before the next instalment off the DC story.

Brilliant!

I enjoyed books 1 to 5 so much and the reading that I bought the last ones because I couldn't bear to wait for my audible subscription to catch up. Thank you Peter Grainger and Gildart Jackson and Audible.

Brilliant

Another fantastic book from Peter Grainger, with the excellent Gildart Jackson doing his stuff brilliantly. DC is such a wonderful character, I am so glad the author has kept his story going. I hope he is well into the next one: two a year would be good! Also, I could listen to Gildart Jackson all day so I hope he is busy in the recording studio making more wonderful audiobooks. The whole series, and related Kings Lake series, are perfection.

Sorry there are no more….yet!

What an absolute delight. A carefully crafted mystery, and nobody dead!
Beautifully read with real empathy and character.
I look forward to more.

Excellent as usual

I have read all of the books in Peter Grainger’s series and really looked forward to them coming out. This was as good as the rest and, like most of his books, has a different plot to the others. Not all authors do this, but his are not formulaic. Like in all well written books, you wish the characters existed.

I would advise reading them in order as the characters develop. The narrator is excellent, too.

The Whole Series - superb

The measured and controlled delivery of the narrator cannot be understated. His voice is an excellent match for DC. Clever plotting, idyllic setting, well-rounded characters all blend in this superb series. Mr Grainger please don’t ever get tired of writing more.

The depth of the characters and the author’s love of the area and nature.

I can honestly say that this is the best series of books I have ever listened to since joining Audible some years ago.
i was unsure when I started on the first one but something drew me in & I was hooked.
The depth of the different characters is brilliant and so well described that I had a picture in mind of how they looked.
The storylines are well thought out and structured to make them easy to follow yet, at the same time, they are delightfully complex and with a twist.
The humour is so dry and I found myself laughing out loud at some of the quips. The sense of danger is evident in some of the chapters but there is no graphic descriptions of violence and no four letter words either.
Overall, the books definitely deserve 6* reviews.

Perfect in every way

I absolutely love all the previous books in this series , both author and narrator and this book is no exception. I close my eyes and listen to the descriptive parts which transport me to the time and place as if I were there. The description of the curlew encounter at the beginning of this book is just lovely. The piece where the ‘disappearing man’ encounters his hitherto unmet granddaughter brought goose bumps in it’s simplicity. A huge thank you to Peter Grainger for his creative talent and to Gildart Jackson for his sensitive bringing to life of this work. Just about to re- listen to the series.
