Summary

A murder. A homecoming. A day of reckoning.

A man’s body washes up on a beach on the North Yorkshire coast with a single gunshot wound to the chest. The only clue to the victim’s identity is a ring engraved with two names.

DCI Tom Raven is back in his hometown of Scarborough for the first time in over 30 years. When offered the chance to lead the murder investigation, he takes it.

Raven quickly discovers that the prime suspect is his once-teenage friend, now a wealthy but shady businessman. He finds an ally in Detective Sergeant Becca Shawcross, but not everyone in the team is on his side.

As Raven delves into the case, he is forced to confront the events that drove him away from Scarborough so many years ago. Given a chance to undo past mistakes, he must make the biggest decision of his life. But first he must learn who he can trust. Because lies can kill.

Set on the North Yorkshire coast, the Tom Raven series is perfect for fans of L. J. Ross, J. D. Kirk, Simon McCleave, and British crime fiction.

Disappointing

I think this might be a good book. Unfortunately, the boring monotone of the narrator means I can't be bothered to finish it. I like to listen to audiobooks in bed night and morning but this one kept sending me to sleep. No change of voice for the different characters and sentences run together without pause. I might try future books by this author but not if they use the same narrator.

Really good story

This is the first book I have listened to by this author & I enjoyed the story very much. It was a bit different the detective having a past in Scarborough. Several red herrings & twist at the end that I wasn’t expecting but the narrator’s voice was oh so boring to listen to. I nearly gave up several times. Shame as I would like to carry on with the series but all of this series is read by same narrator so will give them a miss I think.

Weird Narration

The story engaging enough but the narrator's odd inflections spoil the book. I may read the other books in the series

YORKSHIRE LANDSCAPE

A nice, easy listen with pleasant background scenery! The characters were strong and the plot interesting. Sadly I thought the narration let it down.

Great story

Really enjoyed this story, it kept me guess till the very end.
But the narrator, well it was mixed. The character voices were good but during the actual narration he seemed to have developed a habit of adding a strange inflection at the end of each sentence. I nearly gave up but stuck with it because it was such a great storyline.

Good story - dreadful narratir

I struggled to stay with this book, although I liked the story line.
The narrator, however, was dreadful. all the characters sounded the same, and all sounded like the residents of a home for the very elderly.
The awful narration spoilt this for me and I will give any books with this narrator a wide berth in future.
Shame as I would have liked to hear more of DCI Raven

Interesting

storyline but very badly performed by Dan Calley. He read it so fast it was almost as if he needed to be somewhere. Such a shame.

Good story but narration took getting used to

A good story with twists and turns to the end. Looking forward to the next.
Some accents were not Yorkshire. I kept slipping between Liverpool, Australia and elsewhere but never North Yorkshire.
