Summary

The extraordinary first novel by the master of storytelling.

THE EXTRAORDINARY FIRST NOVEL BY THE MASTER OF STORYTELLING

ACCLAIMED BBC RADIO 4 DRAMATISATION WITH ALL-STAR CAST INCLUDING JAMES MCAVOY, NATALIE DORMER, DAVID HAREWOOD, SOPHIE OKONEDO AND BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

Under the streets of London lies a world most people could never dream of.

When Richard Mayhew stops to help a girl he finds bleeding in the street, his unremarkable life changes in an instant.

This act of kindness leads him to a place filled with murderers and angels, pale girls in black velvet, a Beast in a labyrinth and an Earl who holds Court in a tube train. It is strangely familiar yet utterly bizarre.

Here is London Below, the city of people who have fallen between the cracks. And for Richard Mayhew, it's just the beginning.

Critic reviews

"Prose that dances and dazzles.... Gaiman describes the indescribable." (Susanna Clarke)

"It's virtually impossible to read more than ten words by Neil Gaiman and not wish he would tell you the rest of the story." (Observer

"Much too clever to be caught in the net of a single interpretation." (Philip Pullman)

Beautiful

A fantasy fiction adventure set in London's secret underworld this is a great story read by Neil Gaiman... He paints a picture of a dark and secret world with humour and darkness in equal measure. The characters are imperfect and likeable, the story fantastical but believable. Well worth a listen.

Lost in another world

Just loved this book - and Neil Gaiman's narration was great (albeit his Scottish accent is reminiscent of Mike Myers doing Shrek). Fantastic characters you really cared about - wonderful book.

weird but in a good weird way

Love Neil Gaiman books. Great story line as always and odd beyond comprehension but I just cannot leave be. Narrated by the author and loved the different characters. As a Scot I found Richard Mayhews accent a little irritating but good effort nonetheless. I'll be back for more

loved every second

I am madly jealous of Neil's creativity, he built such a beautiful, inhabitable world full of texture and character, inhabited by so many different, original characters.

Brilliant

Neil Gaiman just continually draws you in with this wonderful weaving story of the "Underworld - The London Below". I cannot think of anybody who could have narrated it better. Superb.

love it

I didn't sleep well enough to write a full review, but this book, is a blinder. Neil Gaiman reads it like a full ensemble cast with each character distinct and memorable. I keep coming back to it. Love it.

Great story read by a great author

I read this a long while ago and was really happy to revisit as an audio book. This is the author’s preferred text, i.e. how Neil Gaiman wanted it. Great characters, great plot and well read by the author himself. I really enjoyed this.

An intricate urban fantasy

It is unusual that I re-listen to audiobooks, but I have just finished Neverwhere for the third time. Neil Gaiman perfectly narrates his own work. The story is set in London Below, an kind of parallel London that is cleverly constructed. It follows the adventures of Door (who can open any lock) and Richard – a normal man who lives in London Above, pulled into London Below after helping the injured Door.

There are many characters who are almost caricatures, the evil henchmen Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar are my particular favourites.

It is difficult to write a review without giving away the storyline, as there are so many twists during the book, so all I can do is highly recommend it!

the Neil Gaiman worlds are allways extraordinary, this is no exception.
being narrated by himself, the way he imagined it, this is an absolutely must "read".
