Summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Superbly read by Marsters

First of all I cannot recommend the narrator James Marsters highly enough. He has the character of Dresden down to a fine art. The combination of story and Marsters reading was exceptional, so much so that I often laughed out loud at some of the snarky comments. As for the book, well Jim Butcher has found a loophole in the Supernatural book market and created a wizard, who is funny, interesting and captivating. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

The first of many..

Would you listen to Storm Front again? Why?

This is another Magic for adults book - very like the London series by Ben Aaronovitch - with a similar cynical humour as well as adult themes and great mystery/thriller story plots. The series is a long one and seems to get better with each novel and though each is a separate story in itself, there seem to be longer acting themes through the series - so read them in order is my advice

What other book might you compare Storm Front to, and why?

Definitely the Ben Aaronovitch London series - similar themes (magical police force/ with more adult themes and very tongue in cheek comedy)

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

He may not be great in book number 1 but gets better as the series develops and is the lovely Spike from Buffy (James Masters)

Any additional comments?

Listen on - the first is good - but the series gets better and better

Fantastic Modern Fantasy

A great noir style pulp storyline set in a believable wold that just happens to have magic and demons vampires and fairies in it. great pacing and sense of danger. extremely likeable flawed antihero. i will be burning through the entire series just as fast as Harry burns through emotional energy.

A light book to play in the background

it's not a masterpiece, but I still enjoyed it. A good choice when you don't want to get too invested in the plot, for example when you're going through a book hangover from a previous read

Great set up for the series

Ages ago I saw the TV series that was created based on the Dresden books. Now that I've heard the first in the Dresden series of books all I can say is, TV didn't do it justice. The characters and the setting are totally engaging the story rips along with great pace and verve, can't wait to listen to the rest! Oh, and James Marsden does a good job with the reading delineating the characters and situations very clearly attaching one to Dresden's plight (even though he's not the most uncomplicated character) making us root for him all the way.

Lots of action, little wit

Lots of action, little wit, a well narrated story. If you like things exploding all the time, this is just the book for you.

Perfect Narration

Fantastic descriptions of characters, effects and magic with a narrator who’s brings it to life as Harry Dresden himself. Great book and fantastic narration. Will have to buy the rest of the series.

Storm front

Great narration with real connection to the characters and the moment. Loved the story wish Harry would stop being so passive.
