Summary
Here's a fantastic ghost adventure story, laced with menace and humour.
When a baby escapes a murderer intent on killing the entire family, who would have thought it would find safety and security in the local graveyard?
Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family.
A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

Not just for children
Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, at nearly 50. Beautifully narrated, good pace and enjoyable story; didn't want it to end.

Enchantingly creepy!
This book was a sheer delight to listen to. I’ve got to admit I wasn’t sure to begin with, but it was on offer, the ‘blurb’ intrigued me so I thought I’d give it a go, and I’m so so glad I did. As another reviewer mentioned, Neil Gaiman’s voice is very like that of the late dearly missed Alan Rickman so that clinched it for me. Initially the thought of a book set in a graveyard didn’t appeal, but in no time at all the characters came to life and I fell in love with them - well, most of them! Normally my genre of choice is thriller, detective, spy, conspiracy, that sort of thing, but I’m about to search for another book written and read by Neil. The humour is sometimes dark, sometimes tongue in cheek but almost always ‘Alan Rickmanish’. I loved it - a brilliant refreshing read!

Love this unusual story
What a really interesting, amazing and delightful book. Despite not being a regular reader of fantasy fiction I love the fantasy world that this author has created. The characters are vividly described and are both intriguing and well rounded.
I felt I was there with Bod throughout his childhood glimpsing his world.

Amazing storyline. I absolutely loved it!😀
Neil Gaiman has an amazingly gripping way of creating an exhilarating storyline, it pulled me further and further into the book until I could not stop! I would recommend this book to anyone who has a taste for drama, excitement, adventure and a little tiny bit of romance.
All in all a really excellent read!!

Such a lovely story...
...and Neil Gaiman has an absolutely lovely voice too. It is strangely reminiscent of Benedict Cumberbatch which is just about the highest compliment I can give, being a huge fan of the man.
I loved all of Neil Gaiman's books, but this one is a real treat. I can only recommend it to anyone!

a delightful fast-paced fairy tale for adults.
This is a delightful fast-paced fairy tale for adults. Both touching and funny, with the occasional creepy passage, it is not only very well written but brilliantly narrated by Neil Gaiman. The characters are colourful and endearing: the dead are eerie, the villains very evil and Bod is the perfect hero - lovable, sweet and strong at the same time. A real treat!
