She thought he was gone. She was wrong.

Fifteen years ago, a serial killer was on a rampage murdering young women in Middlehampton. Then, suddenly, the killings stopped, and the murderer was never found…

So when the body of another young woman is found bearing the twisted killer’s unique hallmark—the overpowering stench of lavender and an origami heart—DS Kat Ballantyne knows this can only mean one thing: the killer is back.

For Kat, whose best friend was the killer’s last victim all those years ago, this is deeply personal. She’ll stop at nothing to prevent more women dying and bring her friend’s murderer to justice. But the scent has gone cold once before. Kat will need all the help she can get in her investigation as she hunts down leads and encounters dead ends and horrifying twists.

With time running out, can she finally crack the case and put a stop to the killings—or will she be the next victim?

I enjoyed this story, although I am always frustrated when apparently law abiding police officers “go it alone”. I’m not sure if I’m interested in the listening to the next instalment, I just don’t feel invested enough. The narrators voice had a strange wobble with long pauses which was distracting, once sped up to 1.2 as a previous review recommended it was much better. Might try book 2 ?

Enjoyable listen at 1.2 speed

Kat finds herself in the middle of a new case, but the new case is the latest round of a case that has haunted her for the last fifteen years, one that has impacted every day of her life for those fifteen years. But if she thought that was tough then she needs to brace herself because the twists, surprises and blows this case brings would bring a weaker woman to her knees. I really like Kat and her team Tom and Leah, even the big boss Linda. But, like Kat, I cannot stand Carver and have to hope that at some point in the series karma will catch up with him. This is a great introduction to the Kat Ballantyne series, I listened to this on Audible with Kindle Unlimited and have already downloaded book 2.

Haunting and disturbingly twisted

This has been in my to listen pile for ages and with the other two books in the sale I thought I would bump it up. It was very a good start with an interesting premise and I am looking forward to how the characters develop both the home and work lives. There is a lot more to come with Tom I feel.
It brought back memories of weekends and evenings at football matches - that was described very well.
It took me a while to warm to the narration style but in the end it worked.

Interesting start to series

I am currently reading this book on kindle and flip between listening and reading depending on what I am doing. The story is absolutely brilliantly written and I’ll most certainly be seeking more titles by this author. The narration on the other hand, left me wondering if I could perhaps get a side hustle with Amazon as a narrator because frankly, anyone with a voice could do a better job than the warbling voice that slowly meanders through this book as though talking to someone who hasn’t graduated nursery school yet! I honestly thought I’d messed up the settings and accidentally initiated some kind of robotic, AI, screen reader. Simply awful. I’ll be avoiding any books narrated by this person again. I’ll read my way through the rest of the book on kindle, because the narration is so poor, it was actually ruining what is, a fantastic story and excellent read.

The fabulous story but simply awful narration!
