A famous victim. A locked room. Dark secrets. For DS Ballantyne, murder isn’t black and white.

DS Kat Ballantyne came to the crime-writing festival for an escape. Instead she’s walked straight into a murder scene.

Moments before he’s due on stage, a famous novelist is found dead in a locked room. It looks like natural causes, but Kat sees tiny clues that suggest murder. As she investigates, she uncovers literary rivalries, personal vendettas and hidden agendas. Is there anyone who didn’t have a motive to murder Mark Swift?

As the case takes a turn for the darker, Kat finds herself in a world where the line between right and wrong is blurred. Can she bring Swift’s killer to justice? And, if so, should she?

I had to preorder this book as soon as I finished the last one as I wanted to know how it got resolved. This gives a hint that it needs to be listened to in order to really get the background of the characters as this is referenced throughout. The lead detective is slightly traumatised, although most of this has been resolved in previous books - it is really the family and direct manager issue that is now being addressed. What I didnt understand is how so often she bypassed her manager and went to his manager - that would be interesting dynamic.

There are new characters introduced which look to be interesting.
The locked in murder was fun to resolve and I did appreciate the author's note at the end.

All in all didnt disappoint and now I cant wait for the next installment.

Just loved this series

Kat knows it can't possibly be, but in a world where the truth is constantly stretched, twisted and hidden, this case is going to be difficult to solve. She has a new team member, but his transition isn't smooth, neither is Tom's recovery. Add that only adds to Kat's stress, confusion and worry, however it doesn't dent her determination to knuckle down and find the truth...which turns out to be heartbreaking.
This isn't my favourite book of the series, it is good, but I enjoyed others more. I listened to this on Audible with Kindle Unlimited.
