Known as the "Prince of Preachers", Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was an English Baptist preacher and pastor of the congregation of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London for 38 years. Spurgeon authored an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns, and sermons.

The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters five to seven) is one of the most beloved passages of scripture. The Sermon is the longest continuous discourse of Christ in the New Testament and includes some of his best known teachings like the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer. In this 1858 sermon, James Smith deals with love or the lack of it. he asks, “Are our spirit, temper, conversation, and general behavior - such as to win the love of others?” and responds, “If we are sour, morose, reserved, snappish, selfish, or given to complaining - we must not be surprised if people are not very warmly attached to us.” His remedy is for every Christian to be more like Christ.
