Voices Within Summary

Bella doesn't speak. But she notices everything. Eight years in crates, on streets, in places where you don't live—you wait. Not a single day had been truly hers. Then came 1,861 days that were finally hers. Then January 5, 2018. Then, somehow, a continuation.

This is fiction built from real life, based on the true story of the author's own rescued beagle, set against the real Illinois shelter Orphans of the Storm, where Bella became a local legend before anyone took her home.

Told entirely from inside a dog's mind—raw, unfiltered, sometimes sarcastic, the book carries what Bella shouldn't: memories that survive death, instincts that cut through pretense, a gaze that sees what humans spend their whole lives hiding from each other. She notices the hand that pets and the same hand that shoves. She notices who looks away. She's not bitter about it. She just doesn't pretend it didn't happen.

This isn't a pet story, and it's certainly not a fairy tale. It's about what it feels like to be overlooked, to finally be seen, and to lose that and what you carry after.

The soul has no breed. Time runs away the same for people and dogs. The difference is, people are better at pretending they don't notice.

Narrated by Megan Tusing, who reads Bella's voice the way it was written: without sentiment, without performance. Just honest.

"I didn't live until I did. And then I had 1,861 days. Every one of them mine."
