Andrew Jackson has the dubious honor of being the first President to have an assassination attempt made upon his life. Picture this: 63-year-old Andrew Jackson is walking across the Capitol Rotunda. Richard Lawrence, an unemployed house painter, moves to the front of the crowd. He fires two pistol shots into the President.

Living Up There is a memoir of time lived mostly at 10,000 feet in the Colorado Rocky Mountains in a home-made cabin. Inimitably personal, it is written with the sensibility of a loving field biologist and human wonderer. This audiobook holds obvious relations with two literary-cultural traditions: first, that of journal memoirs of days spent intentionally removed from the speed and ease and at least some of the understood contracts of "civilization," two of whose best known for bears are Henry David Thoreau's Walden and Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek; and second, that of retreat to the natural basis of the world following the attainment of certain age and completion of responsibility cycles of family and livelihood.

An extraordinary personal testament to the life and times of one of America's great naturalists and literary figures, written by Edward Waldo Emerson, son of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau's friend and mentor. It is perhaps the best short introduction to Thoreau's life and times. "To his lonely happiness the world will owe the best gifts he has left" - Edward Waldo Emerson. Henry Thoreau left society at the age of 28 to live for two years and two months in the woods by his own means. He did this in order that when it came time for him to die he would not discover "that he had not lived".

Although we rely on physicians, calling on them at birth and death and every medical event in between, rarely do we consider the personal challenges faced by doctors-to-be. In 2005 author Jacqueline Marino and photojournalist Tim Harrison had the unprecedented opportunity to chronicle the experience of three students as they learned to become doctors at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Through his fiction, essays, poems, and art, Kahlil Gibran inspired a devoted international following and transformed modern Arabic literature. In this book, Joseph P. Ghougassian brings together the philosophical elements present across Gibran’s diverse writings, including his best-selling work The Prophet, as well as other significant works such as The Broken Wings, which tells the story of doomed young lovers, and the collection of aphorisms in Sand and Foam.

French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy joins Sam Tanenhaus, senior editor of The New York Times Book Review, to talk about his most recent book, Left In Dark Times. Levy argues for a new "left" based on universal values and ethical commitments. Topics include left-wing anti-Zionism, domestic anti-Americanism and the global effects of both.
