Ce périple, les trois jeunes gens l'ont entrepris au mépris du danger, au péril de leur vie, et malgré les supplications de leurs fiancées respectives. Ils l'ont fait pour le rayonnement de la France, le progrès de la science et aussi un peu pour passer le temps. Il en résulte un roman d'aventure avec de l'action à l'intérieur et aussi des temps calmes et du passé simple. Ceci est une expérience de lecture immersive. Hormis deux ou trois passages inquiétants, le suspense y est supportable et l'oeuvre reste accessible au public poitrinaire.
