Fast hätte J. R. R. Tolkien den Ersten Weltkrieg nicht überlebt. Einzig die Tatsache, dass er 1916 am sogenannten Grabenfieber erkrankte und in der Folge nach England zurückgeschickt wurde, rettete ihm wohl das Leben. Tolkien sehnte sich nach seinen Erlebnissen im Ersten Weltkrieg wohl nach Ruhe. Als Professor für englische Philologie in Oxford lebte er zurückgezogen, verreiste selten und rauchte gerne Pfeife – wie die von ihm geschaffenen Hobbits. Tolkien liebte die nordische Mythologie.
