This dissertation is an effort to think through the complexities of how African American literature interacts with what I am terming the notion of uncalling made visible by the heterodox Christianities that fall out of the scope of the Black. In other words, I analyze Black religiosity as an enactment of radical Black collectivity in counterdistinction to a politics of recognition. I argue it is this figure of the uncalled, operating out of heterodox Black religiosities, that can offer an alternative model for liberation and healing that is not bound up in outward cries for recognition.

Fred Rogers fiercely believed that all people deserve love. This conviction wasn’t simply sentimental: it came directly from his Christian faith. God, he insisted, loves us just the way we are. In Exactly as You Are, Shea Tuttle looks at Fred Rogers’s life, the people and places that made him who he was, and his work through Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. She pays particular attention to his faith - because Fred Rogers was a deeply spiritual person, ordained by his church with a one-of-a-kind charge: to minister to children and families through television.

In Help from Heaven, Carlos Vivas shares a story of hope and love as he describes the true events surrounding his near-death experience and the miracles he continues to witness since that day. Through nature and spiritual messages, Vivas describes how God not only saved him, he also transformed him.

I remembered the first time I stepped into a church—it was and seemed to foreign to me. I never experienced god before. I was lost—out in the open. My mother never taught us anything about the lord or Christ. I always felt I had an unknowing relationship with him. It was always there or he was always there to protect me and guide me. I always felt a presence;the lords presence. He brought me a mighty long way.

What started as a gathering of concerned parents and girls around a small kitchen table has now grown to be one of the largest scout-type organizations in the world. The Garibays' story chronicles the 25-year journey of American Heritage Girls from its humble beginnings, the insurmountable problems, and the joy of seeing the providential hand of God map out every detail.

What happens after we die? Do we actually cross into another life? Does a spiritual world actually exist? While you are breathing, learn about the experience of “crossing” and what you will endure if you pass to hell after your death. Become aware (by even realizing signs that may have occurred within your own environment), that a spiritual world does in fact exist. The author provides a colorfully written and true story about the author’s unexpected crossing into an experience of the terror of hell, and describes the Lord’s thereafter comforting appearance.
