Anne and Hutch have escaped the confines of the Tyson Estate with plans to live out in the harsh conditions of The Elements where it is always winter. Instead, they accidentally discover an entire society of people living underground. Dwellers, as they call themselves, enjoy a peaceful existence away from the Estates and out of The Elements in a world called Sub Terra. There are dozens of families living in homes they call Dwellings. They live in what once was the New York City subway system. They exist as people did before The Shift.

Boredom, drudgery, with an occasional excitement brought about by food shortages or blackouts; the illnesses of a dying society devoid of imagination, inventiveness, even competence. At the apex of its soulless construct sit the powerful, cunningly wrestling for position, seeking control over a people who no longer care who controls their lives. And there is no Atlantis, waiting in the wings to provide guidance for those who have been slowly robbed of their will to create, to invent, to prove their competence. The soul of the individual has been lost to the tyranny of the group.

The worst is still to come. They survived what they thought was the worst. But did they really? What if there is something worse than the undead they're still fighting? Set in the futuristic demise of post-apocalyptic doom, the undead outnumber the living 1,000 to 1. Liam is a former soldier on a mission to protect the remaining survivors in the last stronghold, the bowels of the underground. After the undead suspiciously overran his last outpost, Liam worries about this new type of enemy. The undead are changing and somehow getting stronger, faster, and more coordinated.
