Moscow, 1937. Captain Korolev, a police investigator, is enjoying a long-overdue visit from his young son, Yuri, when an eminent scientist is shot dead within sight of the Kremlin, and Korolev is ordered to find the killer. It soon emerges that the victim, a man who it appears would stop at nothing to fulfil his ambitions, was engaged in research of great interest to those at the very top ranks of Soviet power.

Following a previous investigation, which implicated those at the very top in Soviet Russia, Captain Alexei Korolev finds himself hailed as an example to all. But Korolev lives in an uneasy peace - if it is discovered what his real actions were during the case, he will face deportation to Siberia. Instead, Colonel Rodinov of the NKVD security service asks the detective to look into the suspected suicide of a young woman on a film set in the Ukraine. The feared commissar for State Security, Ezhov, wants the matter looked into.

Fresh from a stint undercover in Pelican Bay's super-max prison in Northern California, Ryan Lock, and his business partner, former US Marine Ty Johnson, are in Los Angeles. They are tasked with protecting a young Hollywood starlet from an abusive movie star boyfriend, who refuses to accept that their relationship is over. As Lock knows only too well, and as Ty is about to learn, keeping someone safe from harm can be harder than it looks, and damage can come in unexpected forms...

It sounds like easy money. Fly into Budapest. Handle the exchange in a straightforward kidnap for ransom case. Fly back home. Total time involved: 48 hours. But as private security operators Ryan Lock and Ty Johnson are about to find out, there is no such thing as easy money.
